The Phase II ATLAS Pixel Upgrade: The Inner Tracker (ITk)
The entire tracking system of the ATLAS experiment will be replaced during the LHC Phase II shutdown (foreseen to take place around 2025) by an all-silicon detector called the ITk (Inner Tracker). The pixel detector will comprise the five innermost layers, and will be instrumented with new sensor and readout electronics technologies to improve the tracking performance and cope with the HL-LHC e...
متن کاملThe ATLAS Pixel Project
The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider will incorporate discrete, high-resolution tracking sub-systems in the form of segmented silicon detectors with 40MHz radiation-hard readout electronics. In the region closest to the pp interaction point, the thin silicon tiles will be segmented into a pixel geometry providing two-dimensional space-point information. The current status of the AT...
متن کاملThe ATLAS pixel detector
After a ten years planning and construction phase, the ATLAS pixel detector is nearing its completion and is scheduled to be integrated into the ATLAS detector to take data with the first LHC collisions in 2007. An overview of the construction is presented with particular emphasis on some of the major and most recent problems encountered and solved.
متن کاملValidation Studies of the ATLAS Pixel Detector Control System
The ATLAS pixel detector consists of 1744 identical silicon pixel modules arranged in three barrel layers providing coverage for the central region, and three disk layers on either side of the primary interaction point providing coverage of the forward regions. Once deployed into the experiment, the detector will employ optical data transfer, with the requisite powering being provided by a comp...

We have developed two radiation-hard ASICs for optical data transmission in the ATLAS pixel detector at the LHC at CERN: a driver chip for a Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) diode for 80 Mbit/s data transmission from the detector, and a Bi-Phase Mark decoder chip to recover the control data and 40 MHz clock received optically by a PIN diode. We have successfully implemented both A...
